hume lake
allison and i went to hume lake yesterday. i have many fond memories of hume over the years-- i went to summer camp there for 9 years and finished it off with a summer of working on staff. to be entirely honest, i think that last summer on staff ruined the whole thing for me, but hey! that doesn't stop us from having a good time.

on the way home we saw the biggest V of birds ever!
i don't really have a lot of pictures. actually, we didn't do a lot that was picture worthy. we walked around the lake, sat, ate, sat, watched people from the rock and made fun of all the highschool summer camp romances, talked about the old days, violated camp dress code, had awkward interactions with former co-workers (okay just one and he may have been an ex-boyfriend), and made the snack shop kids refill our water constantly. i'm going to make a shirt that says "crazy about hydration!"

oh man oh man oh man
saw death cab for cutie tonight. AMAZING. amazing.
SUCH a good show. good sound. good people. i swear, the band does whatever they feel like doing. and i love them for it. they played 5 songs from their new album--which i guess is still a hefty amount-- everything else was pulled from out of nowhere. company calls, company calls epilogue, the 405, for what reason (okay i may have made that one up, i can't remember), all kinds from photo album, transatlanticism, forbidden love EP, and hardly anything from plans... it was so great.
i just love that after all the hooplah about plans and narrow stairs, they didn't even feel the need to overplay them. they just played whatever they felt like playing.
along the same lines, tonight really reiterated what is so annoying about bands getting big and having a huge fan base. it's not at all the fact that "everyone knows about them now"-- the issue is that you get really stupid fans who know nothing about them that ruin it for the rest of us. allow me to give a few examples:
1) i will go on the record stating that less than 20% of the thousands of people in that venue had ever heard the song "why you'd want to live here". the song is making fun of los angeles! it's a classic! we were IN the city that the classic song made fun of! at the end of the song when he says "i might explode someday soon" he asked everyone to say "someday soon" with him and no one did, because no one knew what he was talking about. he was like "come on guys.... that was weak" and he made everyone do it again and still no reaction.
2) after opening with bixby canyon bridge and then playing a bunch of older stuff like the new year, a guy behind us yelled "now play a song we know!" seriously guy, why are you even here? did you hear the radio edit of 'i will possess your heart' and think they would play that song over and over again?
3) there were people in front of us that walked out.
okay that's all for now because i HAVE to go to bed. in closing, the show was so great. SO GREAT. and rogue wave was fantastic too.

well played, fazakerley, well played.
went out to my car this morning and found this sitting on top of it:
for those who need some background info, emily's mother-in-law gave her that clock for christmas this past year. we all think it's ugly and it makes sounds like a croaking frog as it ticks. emily left it at our house when she got married.
as it turns out, she also left jim, her beloved gnome, on our porch. we told her she couldn't have the gnome unless she took the clock, too.
jeff needed to come over late last night to drop something off for us, so we told him we'd leave a key by the front door so he could get in if we were all asleep. since we didn't want him stealing the gnome and leaving the clock, we exchanged the gnome for the clock and left the key underneath it.
this morning as i walked out to my car, i found the clock sitting on top of it.

things i am thinking about even though i have to be up for work in 6 hours
- i will always underestimate my footprint on the earth. i realize that when i see something like a sponge ball and think "oh, balloons, i guess those ARE bad for the environment."
- hollywood video gives out free rentals for opening an account with their store. either that or the kid behind the counter really was asking for my phone number.
- i can't believe i am going to be here for another year.
- my parents are currently boarding a plane for china.
- i would love to go for a walk right now.
- they say you can't taste the spinach in a smoothie, but i think that's a lie.

drumroll please
so, big news in my life these days. some of you know that i have been volunteering/interning at mika community development corporation since october. some of you also know that they had a neighborhood adviser position open up that i applied for.
well, monday, june 16, i will be starting my first day as an official staff member! i got the position, and i couldn't be more excited about it.
for those who don't know, mika targets 3 low income neighborhoods in costa mesa to follow the command in micah 6:8-- act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. mika seeks to build sustainable communities, not by bringing resources in from the outside (although there is some of that) but by helping the neighbors realize their potential for being resources themselves. we establish connections and educate and help provide opportunities for something more, not by telling people what we think they need, but by asking them what they need and helping them make that happen.
anyway, mika is planning on moving into a new neighborhood in the next few months, and i will be the one overseeing the whole thing. the neighborhood adviser organizes the church partners and volunteers and home visits and everything.
the position is part-time through americorps, so i will still be continuing my job at mindfire almost full time. the mika position is mostly nights and weekends, so i will pretty much be busy for the next year.
oh, right, the next year. i signed my life away to orange county for another year. if you had told me in august of last year that i would voluntarily be committing myself to another year here, i would have laughed in your face. funny how things work out like that.
so... there it is. this is going to be an incredible experience for me and i'm really excited, but shhh...i'm also pretty terrified of the whole thing.
but hey! sometimes you just have to take that leap of faith and follow the path that you think has been laid out for you. i can talk about grace and urbanity and saving the world all i want, but when it comes down to it, i am scared and ill equipped. but moving across the country last august with no job and no friends and no money and an air mattress in my brother's living room worked out pretty well, so let's see where this one takes me!

marry'd!
emily and jeff got married tonight! there was the in'n'out truck and lots of dancing and a photobooth for everyone to take pictures of themselves and put in the guestbook. at some point in the night emily gave me her bouquet and i took many pictures with it. here is a set of hilary and i:
it was probably one of the best weddings i've ever been to. the only thing that would have made it better is if i knew more people outside of the wedding party.
